Dodgers Agree To Extend Ned Colletti
By Mike Axisa [September 15 at 10:30am CST]

The Dodgers and GM Ned Colletti have agreed to a contract extension, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The two sides have been discussing an extension lately and his current deal included mutual options beyond 2012. Terms of the new agreement are unknown, though it's not unusual for the details of a front office contract to remain a secret.

Colletti has been at the Dodgers' helm since November 2005. The team has gone 586-530 under his watch, thrice winning the NL West and never winning fewer than 80 games in a season. They advanced to the NLCS in both 2008 and 2009. He survived the Frank McCourt ownership fallout, and the new Stan Kasten and Magic Johnson led ownership group showed no indications that they were considering a switch at GM.

Our Transaction Tracker shows all of Colletti's moves as Dodgers GM, the second of which is acquiring Andre Ethier from the Athletics. Other notable moves including acquiring Greg Maddux, signing Hiroki Kuroda, extending Matt Kemp, and acquiring Adrian Gonzalez. Clayton Kershaw was also drafted under Colletti's watch.

My complaints all have to do with how long the contract is. Mutual options "only" sounds good, we can dump him anytime.

It's not as if we can't get rid of him if he sucks shit.

There should be a clause in there that says if he's fired he can't join another team in any capacity until his contract is up or paid in full. I don't want to pay a guy to be part of the gnats organization.

Agree, but "sucking shit" and exactly what that is is the problem, as I see it anyway. In this organization.
I remember in the Manny years, still paying for him BTW, when we went to the NLCS and got whipped by the Phillies, that we were now "elite", and that was enough for so many...being "elite".
I guess being 56 games over .500 over a total of 8 years cummulatively ( an average of about +6 games per year, which has gptten us nothing), is what begats this extension, along with the aforementioned Hanley/Adrian signing, and all the spectacular failures are forgotten within the fog of anticipation. A fog, turning into a brick fucking wall it looks.
There's still time, but we've , in just this season alone, managed to collapse totally from the best record in MLB and an 8 and 1/2 game lead in the NLW, to blowing the division (pretty much a done deal I would say), to a questionable shot at the second WC spot....I guess results are not what counts on the Dodgers.
OK... more Ned, more Mattingly...more of the same. This is the "new" magic I guess...a continuation of the same old policies and bridesmaids level of play we've had for a long, long time. If people want to ignore it, pretend it isn't so, make believe that how we are playing after the world -shaking blockbuster is Dodger power and excellence reborn, then let them. There is always plenty of Kool-Aid to go around for those who believe the saviour is here in Ned and the new ownership, as long as we take that drug that erases your memories...like they sadly had to give veteran Jessica Lynch.
Or some will pretend it just never was, and that Kemp and Adrian and Hanley and Andre are enough.
Maybe, finally, it will be one day soon.
And I, being that dissenter and pessimist that I truly admit to, will say "it's about fucking time". Because it is.
But, it would be so great.

Who wrote that again? Mike Axisa? You sure it wasn't Ned Colletti's mother? Kershaw was drafted under Colletti's watch? OH.
Somehow, there's some other stuff left out of that "resume", I think. Just a few.
I still think it's pretty flimsy to give this guy more time on top of the last eight....extending Kemp-GENIUS, Ned! No other GM would have done that-pure brilliance.
    What's the sense?
Yeah, Irish it is a nightmare...not my worse, that has already happened to me, and there's another coming in November for us I think, but Colletti is up there at the top.
I'm still wondering why the Giants let him "escape" to the LAD? And then won it all a few years later, with him gone. That's just me though...

    absolutely agree
I remember the 8 year WS drought, from 1966 to 1974, which seemed like an eternity to me as a kid
and that's what I think BZ's trying to say
what a lot of us -- neither necessarily right nor wrong -- seem to be missing
it has been 24 years since we've been to the WS and will very likely be at least 25
for a storied franchise like the Dodgers, that is just flat out unacceptable... at least for me
    maybe it's an age thing
especially since a lot of you weren't even born when we were last there
and I don't mean that as a shot at anybody
it's just hard to know what you're missing when you've never experienced
I was 5 when we beat the Twins in 1965
and my memories of that are vague
but I remember 1974 against the A's vividly -- I actually went to game 2 (the 1 game we won) with my Dad
as well as losing to the Yankees in 1977 and 1978
    and then came 1981...
I was 21 years old and thought I was pretty tough
but when Ken Landreaux squeezed that 3rd and final out in (now old) Yankee Stadium
I fell to my knees and began crying, uncontrollably
still gives me chills that I cannot truly describe
those of you who experienced it know what I felt
I'm rambling (as usual), but that is what made us the Dodgers
finishing 2nd was never good enough
but if also ran status is good enough for some of you, then the drinks are on me!
    and Jim

He deserves the extension people. He hasn't made any more mistakes that any other GM has and we have an all-star team (underperforming without a doubt) but the track record for the aquisitions is indisputable. You can criticise him for the contract deferrals but that was his mandate from Frank and his contract for Uribe is god awful no doubt. Other bad contracts of course include JP and Schmidt. This is my opinion and I know is squarely in the minority but I don't care.

I'm with you. I'm not a Ned lover nor am I a heter. Every team and GM have bad contracts. Ned might have more than some and less than others, but the odds were he's have more since he's been more active than others. This team has had a lot of turnover lately. Probably because Ned likes old guys...which sometimes is works and sometimes doesn't.

One thing Ned gets balmed for that happens alot that is really out of his hands is how players keep coming here and completely sucking. They shouldn't but they do.
