He was traded for Kemp. So instead of being stuck with any of Kemp's remaining contract, the Padres took on Olivera... and then DFA'd him when the domestic assault charges or whatever came out.
For as shit of a job Preller did off the bat, he may still come out pretty well in a couple years. Their farm is FUCKING LOADED.
I think this team could/should do some real damage this year. I would hate to be an opposing pitcher against this teams possible lineups. The pitching is one of those "wait and see" things, with the exception of Kershaw and Jansen. It was nice to see such a strong start by this team. And I also enjoyed the gnats losing that ass with bumgarter pitching like ass.
best line of opening day courtesy of mlb network... "After the [Mariners/Astros] game, Felix Hernandez said his groin issue is minor..."
perhaps, but... for as much shit as loria took [and rightfully so] the padres should be disciplined for not putting together a competitive team their entire 25 man roster will earn $28m in 2017 by comparison, kersh will make $33m alone link
Ya got to love it. Hell the TB Rays are one of the least paid teams as well but they have some good players on their team Hell we got a starting 2nd baseman from them for 7 mil a season.
They have some solid pieces in their lineup with Renfroe, Margot, Myers and Solarte, plus Schrimph(sp?) as well. Their pitching is garbage, but they could easily argue that making them sign guys just to sign them would be counterproductive for if they want to use some of their stud pitching prospects in the 2nd half. Not to mention, the Padres HAVE spent a shit ton of money this year. They've bought tons int'l free agents this year. You may not see it in their club payroll, but they've probably spent the third most money on their team this year after the Giants and us. If they were tanking with a shitty farm system like the Marlins had, I'd agree, but they're actually putting together a solid collection of talent that will make them pains here soon.
good points plus the marlin's fire sales were so painfully obvious but i could easily see the pads losing 100 games this season and that coming on the heels of not having a winning record any of the past six seasons would suck to be a padres fan and no guarantee all those prospects pan out or, more likely, that asshat preller won't trade them
Whenever I read anything positive about the Padres' farm I think this.. So lets just see if they're smart enough to actually keep the specs that they now have. It's not enough to just acquire young talent, the 2nd and 3rd parts are developing and then keeping the young talent. Stop making these dumbass trades. Or better yet..keep it up.
Just got done watching the recording of the game. I'm excited! Remember opening day 2012? Dee Gordon A.J Ellis Andre Ether Matt Kemp Juan Rivera James Loney Juan Uribe Can't be overstated how much things have changed. Trying not to take it for granted. We are stacked.
