because it is LA it means there are AA/NA meetings on every corner. if he wants to get in trouble its as easy here as it is in kansas. trouble is everywhere. the guy can be insulated by tons of sober celebrities as soon as he gets off the plane. i want that consistent pop in the middle of our lineup. if it means we trade dre i do it.

Mark Ellis would leadoff. He's not ideal, but he's the best candidate we have (as we saw last year).

No comfort with Dee maturing... eventually...??

At least he has the speed required for the lead off position

Comfort? Negative. The guy has some serious mental flaws.

On the other hand, I'd love to see him become a catalyst for this team!

Dee Gordon will be turning 25 a month into the season, so it's not like he's that young.

he can eventually mature but he doesn't do anything good enough to be able to plug him in at SS and live with his negatives. His game is going to be based around high contact with some gap power, mixed with great range at D with some bad fundamentals.

However, right now he doesn't make high contact and he has horrible fundamentals. Defense at shortstop is too important to risk putting a guy who would ruin the most basic of plays continuously meanwhile not making up for it on the other side.

you do know that every player has that "first year" of decline before they become washed up, right... and now you are saying "give him a 2 year deal" to a player that is never healthy and is in decline...

what I also dont understand is the "its not my money" approach, as it turns everything irrelevant... at the end, the guys signing the players are the ons with the money, and guess what, they try to make smart decisions with it... if we say "oh, go sign Hamilton, Greinke and every big FA, its not my money" you are on a straight line to disappointment, cuz that simply wont happen...

just imagine how happy would you be if they go sign Youk for 2 years and we get our new Uribe... its not your money, but you still get pissed because he simply wont produce...

the biggest issue with Hamilton might not be his addiction, but the effect that the addiction has on his body... he's 32 but his body could easily start giving up on him by the time he' 35, so if you sign him for 6 years you will have 3 years of disaster @ $25M a piece... it would be a matter of evaluating if the ROI for those 3 good years is worth the crap you'll get the next 3...

Okay, well if you're saying that getting Youk would be stupid, and the FO is trying to make smart decisions, then why are we rumored to be interested in him?

I'm not saying he'll be a savior, but he's better than what we've got.

    again I ask (rhetorically)
was 2012 the beginning of youk's decline or just one bad year?
numbers would say the latter but it's impossible to say with certainty
imo the uribe comparison doesn't really work...
career wise youk (.283/.384/.482) has always hit well and gotten on base
    uribe (.251/.296/.419) never has

    back to dee
I agree with almost everything doyer says
except I don't believe he'll ever make contact enough or develop gap power

I could very easily see this happening
not so much a question of "if" he'll break down but "when"

I have no confidence in Dee. We need someone that'll get on base for the big 4. Youk would do that.

    I hear what you're saying
but where would you hit him?
thought I read somewhere that crawford doesn't want to hit leadoff
    hmmm...

after years of watching baseball and offseasons, you get to learn that a lot of the "rumors" are only that... the best example is how last week Hunter was Dodgers target and later they said that it was his agent who called the meeting... there's a big difference between "interested" to "pursuing" to "trying to sign"... I bet we are interested, but if he requests 2 y/$25M, then we are not...

about him being better than what we've got, maybe, but the difference might not be worth the money he requests... again, its all about lineup spots, needs and skills, and what he brings can be filled by other guys that we already have...

Better to have someone on base rather than no one.

    los tigres...

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 14 at 11:08am CST]

The Tigers have agreed to sign Torii Hunter to a two-year deal, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Hunter obtains $26MM over two years, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter). The contract with the Reynolds Sports Management client is pending a physical.
Hunter joins a Tigers lineup that includes Austin Jackson, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. The Tigers view Hunter as a number two hitter, Rosenthal reported yesterday. The 37-year-old figures to play right field for Detroit with Jackson in center and an internal option -- perhaps Andy Dirks or Avisail Garcia -- in left.

Hunter posted a .313/.365/.451 batting line with 16 home runs in 584 plate appearances as the Angels' right fielder last year. Advanced metrics valued his performance above five wins, but he didn’t obtain a qualifying offer from Los Angeles. Perhaps wary of his age and league-best .389 batting average on balls in play, the Angels let Hunter leave without compensation. That’s a bonus for the Tigers who don’t have to surrender a draft choice to add their longtime AL Central rival.

Hunter ranked 20th on MLBTR's list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents. I predicted he would sign in Detroit and wrote today that Hunter would be a good fit in the team’s outfield at the right price. So far five contestants in MLBTR’s Free Agent Prediction Contest have correctly predicted the destinations of all five free agents who have signed.

That's true, it would suck if Hamilton starts breaking down after our back-to-back-to-back World Series championships.
