i think the problem with not being able to sign hiroki stems from asking him to accept the trade. japanese, actually asians in general are very sensitive to what is perceived as a slight. and the if that was the case the dodgers chances of signing him were zero.
but this is an awful signing.

I highly doubt it, its all about money. Kuroda is deserving of 10-12 million and we were probably only going to offer 5-6 million which is terrible.

I know this will not be the popular thing to say but I am okay with this.

Folks, we need to face it. We have an anemic offense at this point. Our season is contingent on Ethier, Uribe, Rivera, Sands, Loney, and Ellis producing. We are also counting on Capuano, Evoaldi, and Lilly being able to hold their own. Bills is also a question insofar as which one will show up. We are a team without a clear direction at this point. I am going to say it again: we missed the boat with not trading Ethier. THAT and the deferred contracts were our undoing. This is all McCourt. He was the cheap bastard who hired Ned and he was the asshole not able to pay for players with actual money.

Yet, there is hope. This team is mediocre at best on paper. Yet, almost this same team won quite a few games in the second half of last year. This is Loney's last shot. He either produces and receives a nice extension or does not. Ethier is gone. No way in hell does he stay. None. He will be a Cub next year. This will also be a chance for Sands show that he is not all hype and can make adjustments when needed.

Assume that our next owner is in place by April. He will want to make a clean break from the past. Ned is gone. Count on it. An established GM will be brought on to restore order. You can also count on some shopping next FA season. The next owner understands how to win back the fans----win. No matter what. Next year's shopping list will be Cain, and one of Quinton, Hamilton, Swisher, or Upton. It has to be done.

Next year the only persons we have locked up are Kemp/Uribe/Sands/Dee/Ellis/Ellis/Bills/Kershaw/Lilly/Eovaldi/Capuano/most of our relief core.
Something has to be done. We cannot win championships with crap. We have NO farm left. NONE. We are at the point of being embarrassed by what we have in reserve.

I am going to be honest. I do not think we are true contenders for another 3 years and that is assuming that our new ownership finds a GM who trades well and is willing to spend in FA. The reason we are in the situation we are in was the lack of direction from McNed. A good ballclub builds from within and brings in FAs to boost a good product. Remember 3 years ago? We had the youth movement. We brought in a slew of guys who only needed a bit of premier help to overcome the postseason. McCourt was content to play the young guys because they did not cost as much. He was unwilling to get FAs that can change the shape of a club. All the while, Ned is making terrible trades that do not work out for the Dodgers. We are where we are. Yes, Prince and Albert would help. But, they would not have completely solved this problem. When you pin your hopes on an aging second baseman who hits terribly and a pitcher who may or may not be another Ted Lilly, you are in serious trouble.

See the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lightening in a bottle can be harnessed and there are too many variables to make such a dire prediction of our future just yet. We don't know who the figurehead of the eventual owners will be and the impact of his reputation will bring. Props to you though SDF on a well written opinion but I am going to disagree.

No reason to act like another serious injury is inevitable just because he's had them in the past. Did you declare Chris Carpenter's career in the shitter as well?

    And I'm with doughty.

There's a difference between declaring someone's career "in the shitter" and paying them 10 million dollars.

I'm as skeptical as they come around here, but saying we have "NO farm left, NONE" is wrong, any way you slice it, that's not correct.

I'm not saying that since Capuano has been injured he's definitely going to get injured, but at the same time that's a huge factor when giving someone a contract, specifically a multi-year one. I don't trust his arm to throw 350 innings over the next two seasons, do you?

I could see it. I could also see him fucking his arm up again. I dont see how anyone could try to rationally predict injuries. I do think he'll be effective for us.

You don't see how you can predict injuries? Alright so who would you rather sign, Eric Bedard or Mark Buerhle? Bedard is better when healthy right? Obviously you have to take injury history into consideration when making FA signings.

Let me say this and I could be wrong: I see Capuano having a very Wolf like couple of years with us.

I don't know, guys. He gave up 27 HRs last season. If you look at his stats, he's always been prone to the bombs. So, even if he stays healthy he could be trouble.

    I can see a realistic season looking like, 17 W's, 211 K's, 2.37 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, with 46 HR's given up.

My biggest problem? If you're gonna give this guy 10 million over two years, why not give kuroda that money for one? We have no idea what capuano will do, but we do know what hiku brings to the table. Money better spent than in this guy.
