Shields contract is a tad back loaded. Only 10 million next this year and of course more each of the next 3 years over 20 million per. The Padres could have both Upton and Kennedy coming off the books in 2016 which makes the Shields contract easier. Now the million dollar question for Padre fans is does this create salary space to go after a certain Cuban or two?

I didn't read the link. Did they get into Shields' desire to pitch for the Dodgers?

Hard to believe that home cooking or state taxes truly made or broke that decision.

I always thought that once a player earned xx millions, thus got ahead of the wolves and could live comfortably forever, then his prime consideration would be on where he could make a difference or earn a ring. OK Shields could 'make a larger difference' for the Padres but no way despite their recent signing fervor does anyone think that they can win a ring this year of next.

Adding Upton, Kemp and Shields will help but not enough to overcome many of the stronger teams.

I guess that we'll see in October

    my thinking as well
the padres will be better, much better
    but they an elite team
their defense is terrible; only two guys [amarista and norris] with positive dWAR
and their offense after kemp, upton and myers is [how do i say this nicely?] unspectacular
and what if those guys go on the shelf or into a slump?
from a marketing standpoint their front office did a great job
they will sell a shit-ton more tickets and jerseys et al
but my guess is they'll finish around .500, maybe 82-80

I'd be happy if they just made life more difficult for the SFags

I'd also expect them to hit 85W's but not win anything

i think they'll finish 5-7 games behind us, and ahead of the giants by roughly the same amount

The above data is probably based on 2012 info (as noted in the Kemp data) and would be obviously improved for some players. It is different from sport to sport and player to player. Allen Iverson has a negative net worth. State taxes can play a major role in net worth. Jeter was maintaining a Florida home for years and that was a hot topic with NYC tax officials. For a player like Jeter, Kemp etc who have multiple endorsements it is those endorsements that are most impacted by state residency. Playing and living in California is a burden. Imagine the joy of Dee Gordon in going from tax heavy California to tax free Florida or any perhaps why we had to overpay for Grienke to sign him and the burden we might have in competing for some of the Cuban players depending on who we are bidding against.

@CapnTreee and @irish - I already picked the pAAdres to finish 2nd and the SFaG's to finish 3rd or worse, so it would delight me to see Kemp & Ko. punk Pussy and Boots (Bochy).
