Not a deal I'd make If I were them considering there is about a 1% chance they re-sign Upton. Keep Myers for the long haul and they can put someone else in CF in 2016.
That would be Josh Johnson or Morrow. Josh Johnson still has loads of potential and there is no better place to get right than San Diego
Make note the following is pre-Shields: http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/team/depth_chart/index.jsp?c_id=sd
Yea, verily. It's all about winning....if he has a good year and helps gets the Pads to the post, no matter how old the fucking guy is, or how much this poster or that one would not have spent or what kinda contract they would have or not have inked with him, it'll all be worth it...100%, without a doubt. It doesn't matter about draft picks, too much money, his K ratio tailing off, etc...if they are in it in October, it will absolutely all worth it, even if he goes to an assisted living home in 2016, and he still gets paid as long as Bobby Bonilla. I applaud the Padres for this move, and they finally got some balls and are going for it, win or lose. And Black will know exactly what to do with him.
The Padres are being aggressive, I like it. I mean... this whole thing is going to blow up in their face, but their FO is giving the team a chance by all the players they are putting together. The Padres weren't helping us by being pushovers the past few years, so this will only help us get better too.
Good way to look at it, as a Dodger fan. And tougher competition does usually breed more toughness within your own organization...but I wonder why you're writing that it will blow up in their faces? Too much money spent? Contracts too long? Bad "clubhouse mix? I'm telling ya'...if they get there, and maybe even got hot and win at the end, no body will give a shit what they spent, or how long these guys are around as dead weight. If indeed, they are. We've had quite a bit in our own house these recent times...it's all part of it. It's always been "what have you done for me lately" anyway, in BB.
So if the Pads make the postseason, the deal will have been worth it? Well then I suppose that if they miss the postseason, the deal will not have been worth it. Noted. I don't agree with such a viewpoint, but noted. As Mouse put it..if the deal blows up in their face with Shields himself struggling, it wasn't worth it. Its an individual performance based contract. Either he lives up to it or he doesn't. He can't be Ethier and be a spectator. Nobody looks at Crawford's contract and puts a " we made the playoffs, so he's worth that money " spin on it, so its not going for Shields either. As lowly as the Pads are, I've never seen them as pushovers. They've routinely gotten hot in the 2nd half of seasons and played spoiler over the last handful of years..had a role in making sure the Dodgers didn't get the #1 seed last year. That said..just like we all appreciate Greinke's take on our team..the Pads have to get to know one another as well. Aside from their defense, that'll be another issue.
I'll either look smart or go down with the ship but no they are not. The numbers don't add up. Fangraphs has them as an 80 win team with Shields. I have them one or two less. Hamels would be a significant addition and maybe make them on par with the Giants, but not substantially better. Getting maybe five wins out of the IF is insane.
This. The INF production just isn't there, and we've talked about the OF defense so much I am blue in the face.
Whatever happens with the Pads, and there is no chance that it's not worth it. Doesn't exist , no matter what the results. because as stated, "the lowly Pads", languishing for so long in the SF , LA shadows, at least throw caution to the wind, and are taking a shot. Great cajones and to top it off, the Los Angeles Dodgers are helping them pay for these admirable/strategically key moves, whether we want to admit it or not. Getting money from the Kemp deal and putting it back into a still viable, possibly dominating pitcher in a huge park where they don't play the faggot DH abomination, like Shields is a great "fuck you" move, IMO. A move (dare I say it?), worthy of our Alamogordo think tank level FO... If they finish last (which they wont, of course), then they still get all credit due...and it will have been worth it.
pretty much. they're gonna go to Amaro about Hamels when really they need to be targeting Ben Revere.
Well, whatever happens, everyone sure is talking about the Padres... that's one thing that's for sure.
I've said before I thought they were contenders for the a Wild Card spot. Now with Shields I think their rotation is very strong (assuming Cashner's health) with good depth. If you think they're an 86 win team before Shields (I do) then this is a significant move. And yes, they have some spots to fill in the IF. and yes, the OF defense might be the worst in baseball assuming metrics are trust worth. But they're not done and that scares me.
The Madres always give us headaches as it is. At least now it will be a GOOD team causing us fits. I feel better about that. We'll own the other three.
