    • Dodgers utilityman Alex Guerrero has been on quite the streak at the plate, complicating the team’s playing time situation in a good way. As Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports, skipper Don Mattingly says that the club is taking the long view in constructing its roster and distributing plate appearances. “We’re just a better club the way we are,” Mattingly said. “And we’ll see. We’re not going to be hard-headed to the point where we’re going to say, ‘This is what we said we’re going to do and we’re going to stay with it.’ You make decisions based on where you’re at, where you’re going.” Noting that Justin Turner also warrants more action based on his outstanding 2014, Mattingly explained: “J.T. hits .340 last year, leads the league in hitting, basically. Now, because he’s not the flavor of the day, we start talking about somebody else. That’s where we can’t get involved with what happened over a 10-day period. We have to make decisions based on long term and what we see and project, but also with the fact that things change. Not discounting Alex, but you still have a full roster we know we’ll use over the course of the season.” Of course, it bears noting that the team is still overflowing with quality infield options — even before Hector Olivera comes stateside — and Guerrero is an increasingly interesting trade target.

" Long term ". Heh. In other words, unless there's a rash of injuries, don't expect to see Guerrero taking over in LF and further backing that position up. Ethier and Crawford need to play and at the very least try to build some value so they can be moved at some point in the " long term ". Not to mention, SVS needs to play..it's not like he isn't playing well. He's been the best of the 3 thus far, so he's earned his shot as well.

DBB zeroed in on how Turner deserves to play, so 3B is pretty much where they see Guerrero maybe gettin a shot to become a starter at some point in the future..just Turner will probably get 1st dibs if Juan Rojas keeps suckin balls. All in all, Guerrero's still on the outside lookin in..it's not his fault either. This roster isn't really a smooth fit right now. I know some seem to think that Guerrero " forcing " his way onto the team is the problem or that DBB has it out for him because of that. I don't believe that because IMO Guerrero earned a spot in the spring and the way he performed is to be respected, especially after having his fuckin ear chomped on. Uribe's the one who's been shitty since the off-season ended, but he's under contract as well and so here we are.

I mean in a perfect world Kike Hernandez would be up ( and Uribe gone completely) because they need a backup SS who can handle that position ( as Turner cannot) + Hernandez can just play everywhere. You don't have to call up Heisey if you have Hernandez in Uribe's roster spot. And then also you have 3 left fielders and shit like that right now..two of whom are overpaid and stepping on SVS's potential to produce in a big way. And I didn't even mention Seager, who they think could be ready in June/July. The roster is just an unfinished product right now, but on the flip side one could say " look at all the depth ". So, for now, they juggle all these roster imperfections and try to stay in 1st place. I understand trying to be fair, but at some point commitments need to be taken into consideration. They have committed guaranteed money/multiple years to Guerrero.

So many wrong things in DBB's statements. It's sad. The dude knows baseball. But he's a terrible manager it appears.

    Yeah, I agree.
But being the great player he was, definitely (obviously) does not give him managing chops.
It's like going to a priest and asking him about marital problems...or asking a bald barber to find out how to keep your hair...or having a best selling diet book, like Dr. Phil, when you're a fat fuck, plain and simple. People buying it like crazy....I don't get it.
Can you watch this team for long, even the small SAMPLE SIZE of this season, and not wonder at least a few times, "WTF is this guy doing out there"???
Is a huge market team like the LAD, picked by the BB intelligensia to go far, even win it finally, have the 17th rated manager in MLB? For you stat freaks and those who put so much importance on projections, etc...does it make sense to have a guy that's rated less than half way up the ladder running the team on the field?

Dons problems in managing has always been his inability to adapt and learn from his mistakes. He's too hard headed and it fucks him over. He's been managing for going on five years and he still makes the same fucking mistakes.
Granted, we didn't play well. This was a full team loss. I Think we have the talent, but whether or not they could win in spite of him has me worried.

His results kinda remind me of Belisario

When he's doing good and making people miss, you think Oh shit hell yeah no one can hit this dude. No one can touch Baez fastball, no one can make good contact off Belisario's 97 mph sinker

Then it's all he throws and Belisario gives up a thousand hits in a row and Baez gives up a bomb 2,000 feet into the stands and you're like "oh right, MLB hitters are fucking good and can hit pretty good when they know what's coming"

Baez should be a specialist in a way, only match him up with dudes who can't catch up to a fastball. Not a Matt Holliday type, more like a Darwin Barney. So basically, a bad hitter

But yeah, I think Baez is the dude who makes me the most nervous when he comes in

There's no excuse not to start Guerrero at this point. I get what the Dodgers were doing. Alex might have some prima donna in him: refused to go to the minors (likely to work on his defense at 3B/LF), he's not known for being a good defender, he sat out on his team in Cuba because he didn't make the national team, got his ear bit off (and even though he was the victim, you don't usually get your ear bit off for giving too many high-5's)... But he's just been hitting too ridiculous to ignore. He's not getting cheap hits either, he's knocking the cover off the ball. That combined with Uribe's slow start (and Uribe should have a short leash with his past craptitude, plus Uribe isn't even playing his normal smooth Defense), makes this a no-brainer.

No more excuses. Alex starts until there's a reason not to start him.

Like Vinny has said multiple times this year, velocity means little to these MLB hitters. You can throw 100 and they'll still hit it 400 ft. Starting to sound like a broken record, but he needs to command his off speed before he can be taken seriously as anything but a mop up reliever.

With the commitment that's been made to him, Guerrero should be getting ample consideration.

if they're looking long term and saying " well, we don't plan on having Guerrero at 3B going forward because we have Olivera and perhaps Seager, so we're not gonna get that whole thing started "..i have a problem with that sort of long term view of things. if that's the case..throw in a combined 80 million and dismiss Crawford and Ethier right now because they cannot be part of the plan going forward either..it's time to start SVS. so hopefully that's not the underlying viewpoint.

sadly, i get the feeling that the reason not to start Guerrero will be that he's no longer on this team.

if i were GM..no lie..i'd be giddy as fuck right now. why? because Guerrero could be a Major League level sweetener that helps facilitate an Ethier or Crawford trade. one of the last things i'd want..and this speaks to what you mentioned..is for Guerrero's defense to be exposed in a big way. everybody knows he needs some work defensively, but it's another thing entirely to learn how much work he needs at a major league level. quite a bit of value on the line.

SVS and Turner need to stay on the bench. They are great in those roles and perfect for those roles. Competent pinch hitters, can play different positions, have some pop.... Good for Donnie's love affair with double switches....etc.

Remember benches of Sweeney, Shumaker, Young, Loretta (big hit notwithstanding), Miles, etc.? I do and I hated it.

I agree, unless we are completely misinterpreting the club's attitude towards him, his time with the Dodgers could be short. That said, I don't see the team trading him right now. With the exception of a frontline SP (which every team can use), we don't have a clear hole to fill. And as much as the team wants him in the minors, there is a role for him on the major league team as a strong RH PH and backup infielder. If we trade Guerrero now, then Howie, Rollins, or Uribe get hurt, we would be unnecessarily thin with infield hitters.

But as the summer moves on, team needs become clearer, and Olivera and Seager get closer - he seems like a player our FO wouldn't mind parting with.

not being able to find a hole is certainly a result of having so much depth. what ends up happening in these cases is they start looking down the line at their future commitments. i mean just look at the Olivera signing..they grabbed him with 2016 in mind and that was a big dollar amount invested. the market for 3B in the upcoming off-season is so despicable that they took an early leap and he's also there if they can't get anything done with Kendrick.

there's no doubt that they still have some spring cleaning to do because of Ethier and Crawford and their wanting to get younger as a team. i feel like Kike Hernandez could move right in if any of our infielders got hurt and of course Corey Seager is just waiting to " Wally Pip " one of those old guys on the left side of the infield. he's around the corner. i don't think they'd miss Guerrero as much next year..this year, moving a hot bat like that might sting a bit, but there are other options. just have to have that Olivera-like faith.

My problem with the Guerrero talk is that it's been 20 ABs. I'm fine with giving him a shot, but anyone to expect this kind of production or for him to tear it up is outside their mind.

this part infuriates me more than anything else
you know when the time was to reward turner for his great 2014?... in fucken 2014!!!
and i'm sorry, but anyone with less than 300 at bats [322 pa's] can not "basically" lead the league in hitting you stupid, ignorant, hayseed fucken cunt!
otherwise, with that logic [or lack thereof] guerrero is "basically" leading the league right fucken now!!!
when does he get a shot, next year?!!!
fucken idiot should have been fired two years ago when we were in dead last [as many as] 9.5 games back and [as many as] 12 games under .500
that team caught fire in spite of him, not because of him -- otherwise they never would have been that abysmal to begin with
the sooner they fire his inept ass the sooner we'll be legitimate contenders
would much rather have wallach in charge
    end of rant
    :irish::soapbox:
