I don't know how it took me this long to find this.

.409 OBP this year. Combined 11.7 WAR in the 4 years since being a Dodger, with 60 or so games remaining this year. One of the best pitch framers in the game. Since 2011 Dodger catchers have a combined 7.6 WAR, and when you take out AJ's outlier 2012 it's even more pathetic.

I'm not sure how he'll age, so I'm not sure I'd give him the 3 years he's probably looking for, but I'd sure have loved his production the past 4 years. There was and still is absolutely no defense for DFA'ing him. Continues to be one of the most frustrating moves Ned's ever made.

Ellis has basically played two full seasons, 2012 and 2013, and he posted a combined 5.7 WAR. In those same two seasons, Martin has posted a 6.0 WAR-better, yes...but not 5 million dollars better. His last two years in Dodger stadium he posted a combined 4.3 WAR, which may or may not have significance, who the fuck knows?

If you look at dWAR for those two years the edge goes to Martin, 2.6 vs. 1.8. If you look at oRAR the numbers favor Ellis, 56 to 49. At this stage in their careers I'd just as soon keep the 5 million in my pocket and stay with AJ as the search continues for his replacement. Overspending for Martin just doesn't make sense.

Set up the ring, Koufax in one corner, VRP in the other. Give me a ringside table and keep the tequila shots coming, please!

Remember though guys. Martin has a Canadian douchebag% +7826 whilst all other Dodger catchers have a 0.0000 rating. Just the facts.

The argument is not AJ Ellis vs Russell Martin because Russell Martin was literally released. We didn't have to choose one or the other we could (and should) have had both. The production we'd have had at catcher if both were here is absolutely worth 5 million dollars, which in FA terms is approximately 0.7 win shares.

Jeannie or not, we need to make sure we keep AJ, and keep him happy. AJ has a Kershaw Bestie Average (KBA) of .998

I'm fine with a weaker hitting catcher, provided he does everything else well. But that said, there has to be a line on how weak is excusable. Right now, production from the catcher position has Dodgers dead last in batting average, and it's not even close (Dodgers .188, next worse .210). You say, "yeah, but Ellis walks a lot." Okay, sure. Let's look at OPS. Sure enough, dead last again (Dodger .550, next worse .604). Over 50 points lower than the second worst, the Mets. Over 65 points lower than the 3rd worst, the Cubs. That's just downright embarrassing.

On an individual basis, among teams' primary catchers, Ellis is easily the worst, hitting .189. Next lowest are the Mets catcher (.220) and Marlins catcher (.224). Add in all the backup catchers, and Ellis is still absolutely last among catchers with at least 100 ABs.

Look, if he was hitting in the .220-.240 range, I wouldn't be thrilled, but I could stomach it. This sub-200 crap is hurting the team and is not acceptable.

I'm not saying Martin is the answer, but a change has to be made.

I'd take a pitchback net over "Instant out" Ellis about now....

When did you start liking batting average?

Not sure what you mean, Codge. I've never been against using batting average. But substitute OBP or RBIs or whatever and our ranking only improves marginally. The sad fact is that most teams have backup catchers hitting better than Ellis, whatever metric you use.

I understand AJ has been sucking eggs, but it's a little weird to me that with a handle like lastatman you would use batting average as your main yardstick, that's all. And I agree it doesn't really matter what you look at, the Dodgers staff is sucking hind tit. I just figured you'd look at it from a more modern statistical perspective, that's all. Just struck me as odd. I don't know what's wrong with Ellis, if he's pressing or isn't seeing the ball well or whatever. I know he's been more patient and had better recognition in the past than he does now.

Ironically, more often than not I go old-school on stats.

He isn't old enough yet so Ned isn't interested. Besides. They've converted Santana to 3B/1B/DH. He isn't that great behind the plate.
