re-signing mattingly should have been a distant third behind kersh and hanley

Looking at it another way it could be that the aforementioned players could have wanted this cleared up 1st. Not saying you are wrong but there could have been a rationale in the timing of it all.

CK needs to outwait the Tanaka event in order to get paid better. He knows it. Kasten knows it.

Mike Ferrin stated on the Fringe Average podcast that Kershaw is definitely interested in becoming a Free Agent. That scares me so much.

    this fucken sucks
no wonder nightengale just tweeted that we're going hard after tanaka

The #Dodgers have let it be known they plan to go all-out in their efforts to sign Tanaka, saying they and certainly won't be out-bid.

Scares me too. I really don't like the idea of Kershaw being a free agent with so many teams out there who will go hard after him.

I have to think it is not about the money. The only other thing could be location. If Kershaw states that it is a location thing, I say offer him a shortened contact at a huge dollar amount. 5 years / 157mil. We lock him up for five more. This allows us to keep stocking the farm in hopes we create an ace. It also ensure we still have one ace if Greinke walks after 2015 (he has an opt out). I have to think that Tanaka needs to move from luxury towards necessity if we want to continue to have pitching dominance after this year.

one man does not make a champion, and as much as i want him to stay, if he doesn't want to play here then fuck him.

I don't know why he wouldn't want to come back. We're awesome.

this. they offered him 250M and if he gets to free agency he'll be offered at least that...if he turns that down to go to Texas for less...FUCK HIM. and that's that. we move on. we have a rich history when it comes to pitching and a phenom in Urias waiting in the wings + they'll buy David Price. if our starters in a couple years are Tanaka-Price-Greinke-Ryu-Urias-Lee-Stripling i'll sleep just fine.

Point of order sir, they cannot 'buy' Price, unless you mean buy him with prospects.

    Carry on.

in a couple years they can...that's what i meant when i said " if our starters in a couple years are... "

also, yeh they can use prospects to get him early if CK decides to leave.

nobody knows what the hold up is on the Kershaw deal, but the bottom line is this...Kershaw has leverage and we should love that. it's not like they can't afford him. think about it in terms of what's going on in the NBA with Kevin Love and the TWolves right now. Love will be a free agent soon and the pressure is on the TWolves to improve the team around him so that maybe he'll decide to stay. well...the pressure's on the Dodgers to do the same...to keep improving the team and making it a place that Kershaw never wants to leave...pressure on the team to perform well and make it a winning environment that Kershaw will wanna be a part of. ultimately, that's what we all want...a better roster, better managing decisions, and better performance.

no probs. like everyone else, i'd prefer CK stay instead of him leaving and us getting Price, but i'm just sayin...we'll still have a hell of staff without him and we don't need anybody that doesn't wanna be around. especially being that we're all in on international prospects these days, there's no telling who else our scouts turn up over the next few years. but i actually hope CK waits until after next season to sign and just keeps our front office and players on their toes. once we get all of our impact guys signed and locked in the only way to spur them will be leaking trade rumors or threatening to trade them...that stuff is much more of a gamble because you don't know how a guy's gonna react. one guy would likely have to be made an example of and unless it's somebody of high stature, it won't resonate.

we're kind of a long way off ( we think) before Urias makes the jump, but he's got a shot to be a real ace.

Tanaka and CK have the same agent. Kershaw not signed could put more pressure on the Dodgers to go after Tanaka with our big bucks and drive his price up. The more teams in a bidding war the higher the agents probable commission.

    14 questions before spring training
    By David Schoenfield | ESPN.com -- 2 hours ago

It's one month to the official start date of spring training (the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will start a week earlier due to their opening two games in Australia). It's been quiet the past few weeks as everybody waits for Masahiro Tanaka to sign. But the quiet means there are still many questions to consider over the next month. Here are 14:

    1. Can the Dodgers afford both Clayton Kershaw and Masahiro Tanaka?

Well, I suppose they could considering the Dodgers seem to have enough money to fill all the swimming pools in Malibu. But let's say Kershaw eventually signs a $300 million contract and Tanaka goes for $120 million. Throw in the $102 million still owed Zack Greinke and you would be talking over $500 million just for three pitchers -- on top of the $129 million owed Matt Kemp and $110 million owed Adrian Gonzalez. They're three great pitchers, but they're still pitchers with all the inherent injury risks that pitchers have. But unless Kershaw gets done in the next week, the Dodgers have a decision to make before the Jan. 24 deadline to sign Tanaka: All in on both or just one?
