That’s one of the reasons why the Yankees/Red Sox are so nauseating IMO. Being the manager for those two teams has to be one of the worst jobs in MLB.

This sucks BIG TIME. There has been a lot of chatter that Herges is the next big thing after all he has done for our organization, including the belief that he was the heir-apparent to Honeycutt. I guess you could argue that the org did not feel this way since they elected not to find a spot for him, but this one looks like it could hurt.

Why not just keep firing managers until you get the one you like?

Something tells me the pitching coach was not the main problem in SF. Rigetti was considered one of the best too.

Their BP had no one and they had atrocious lack of power in that lineup.

Yeah I didn't mean that he was going to turn the Giants into a force, more that it sucks to lose a guy like Herges, even more so to a rival.

i didn't know he was so well thought of
have to figure he would have been waiting a while for honeycutt to retire
wish i could say i wish him luck but i just can't

Why wouldn't a guy in the MiL take a pitching coach position in the show?
Seems like that what it's all about to me...

I was bored yesterday and earlier today, so I started thinking about some of the decisions to be made this off-season regardless of the outcome of this series. Plus, they are pretty much fucked (down 4-0 in the 3rd as of this post).

    - Grandal is as good as gone, one year of control left, plays a position where production is valued immensely. Not to mention, Barnes pretty much took the job.
    - Do Maeda and/or Wood return to the rotation next spring? Maeda has obviously been fantastic in relief, but he would need his incentive-laden deal restructured. Also, the breakdown of Alex Wood has seem to become an annual thing and has to make them wonder if he can throw 175 good innings.
    - If they decide to move one or both of those guys to the bullpen permanently, they need at least one starter.
    - How to address CF or LF? This may be where trading Grandal comes in, trading for a cost-controlled OF. If not, Lorenzo Cain and Jay Bruce are free agent options.
    - What to do about Adrian? Maybe eat half of his ~$21M to make him an option for a team desperate for 1B production?
    - Finally, what to do about all of the back-end/injured starter options(Stewart, Kazmir, McCarthy, Urias(?) Ryu)?

    - I agree, I think Grandal is as good as gone. Barnes seems to have taken the job, plus there is significant depth in the system there. What they love so much about him (framing) is something that Barnes does, but not with the accompanying passed balls. Also Barnes is generally regarded as a great game caller. I think he more likely gets them arms, not an OF'er in trade.

    - Yes, they both are going to be back in the rotation in a likelihood. Maeda was still a damn good starter and those are hard to come by for cheap. They will probably handle Wood with kid gloves again, but he is going to have to work hard in the off season to build up his stamina.

    - I think they still will look to retain Yu, but that may be about it. Still under contract next year are Kershaw, Hill, Wood, Maeda, McCarthy, Kazmir, Ryu, Urias, Stewart, Buehler and Oaks. They've got arms and two rooks have front line potential so they could wait until the deadline to address SP again.

    - I'd guess they do the same thing as last season and look for a platoon bat for the OF, but otherwise will probably come to camp with their guns. Puig, Hernandez, Verdugo, Toles, Thompson, Segedin and Taylor is a solid foundation. I doubt they spend any money on a FA bat.

    - I don't think they trade Adrian, I think they ask him to retire or he does that injury retirement that I mentioned has been talked about. The latter being the most ideal scenario for the team as that drops them down into 170's for 2018. Otherwise, they give him a shot in ST and if he does somehow fix himself, the Dodgers have a good problem to have.

    - I think they will try to deal all of Ryu, McCarthy and Kazmir and that is about all they do unless something too good to pass comes along. As shitty as it feels to watch these guys the last 1.25 games, the truth is, they are here from guys they found off the scrape heap and developed or guys from within the system (outside of Darvish and Hill). We have guys playing poorly right now, but the only hole going forward is at 2B and that could very well be handled(and should be) by Taylor. Verdugo should probably get the first shot at CF next spring, Taylor move to 2B and Joc battles for LF with Toles for that side of the platoon. Apparently they have tinkered with Verdugo's swing and he has been crushing the ball in instructs or whatever it is called while they stay hot if they're needed. He is such an approach change from what we have, I think he is too important to pass up a shot too.
