Will the Dodgers cut Brandon League and eat $17 million?
by Aaron Gleeman | NBC Hardball Talk -- 3 hours ago

This time last year Brandon League had just signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract to become the Dodgers’ closer and now he’s in danger of not even making the team out of spring training.

League was awful last season, losing the closer gig and being demoted to a mop-up role while posting a 5.30 ERA in 54 innings, and if there’s one team that won’t base a roster decision on simply owing someone a bunch of money it’s probably the Dodgers.

Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times notes that they’re stacked with bullpen options, both in terms of established veterans (many of whom have closing experience) and higher-upside young arms. League, meanwhile, has a 16.88 ERA this spring.

Dilbeck speculates that League will make the team, but be on a very short leash to begin the season. Whatever the case, a contract that was immediately mocked is now looking even worse than anyone could have imagined. Maybe the Dodgers will eat a big portion of the remaining money just to get another team to take League off their hands?

I don't care what he makes, it is the right baseball move.
He didn't get the job done last year. He looks just as bad if not worse this spring.
There is no excuse to take a roster spot from a more deserving player just because he has a large contract.

I think the Dodgers have done enough over the last 2 years to prove they won't make decisions based on money. But does it really matter if 2/3 of us aren't able to watch the games?

It makes no difference if he sucks balls or is cut.He still gets paid. If he takes a roster spot and we lose Rosin to keep this douche around then the FO failed.

Did the same thing with Lilly, turned a successful short term rental into an albatross.

Sometimes a successful rental is just that.

The Dodgers are flush with relievers. Stocked with veteran arms. Have three former closers backing up Kenley Jansen. Returned veterans J.P. Howell and Jamey Wright. So completely stacked in the bullpen right now that barring injury, Paco Rodriguez, Chris Withrow, Seth Rosin, Javy Guerra and Jose Dominguez all do not figure to make the team. Further, Rodriguez, Rosin, Guerra and Dominguez have not given up a run this spring and have combined for 22 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Which makes the predicament … Brandon League.

Going into last season, League was signed for three years to be the Dodgers’ closer at a whopping $22.2 million. And he went bust. He lost his closers’ job to Jansen by early June and finished the season with a 5.30 earned-run average and a 1.55 walks plus hits per inning pitched.

League showed some signs of getting it back together in the final month (3.68 ERA), but now this spring, with a bullpen overflowing with options, he is again looking lost... and still owed $17 million over the next two years. He came in Monday’s 8-8 Dodgers’ tie with the Athletics in the sixth and promptly walked ex-teammate Nick Punto and gave up a two-run homer to Josh Donaldson. He got one out and was replaced by Chris Perez, exiting with a spring ERA of 16.88. That’s three rough outings in as many tries.

So far today Rosin is one inning pitched no runs and 2 strikeouts. We either trade for him or send him back to Philly or keep him on the 25 man roster. Mahon sucked eggs today and League not being able to pitch sucked himself. If we send Rosin back why did we select him. What more could he have done?

    totally agree
rosin >>> malhomo and league combined imo
and yeah, i understand not wanting to essentially throw away the $17MM still owed to league
but what difference does it make holding onto him if he's ineffective?
i mean whether it's $1,700 or $17MM, you'd still be getting zero return on your investment right?
cut his dumb ass and hang onto someone who might actually help
