Jon Heyman ✔@JonHeyman Things are heating up with Harper. Intensified is the word I heard. Phillies are the favorite, but word remains that nothing’s done yet. Will be a long-term deal. 11:08 AM - Feb 17, 2019
My theory: if Harper wanted to play for the Phillies, he would have been signed a long time ago. I think they have the best offer on the table, but he doesn’t actually want to play there. It doesn’t mean he won’t sign there, but he doesn’t seem enthusiastic about it.
I’m sure he has those deals on the table. He already had one with the Nationals. But he clearly doesn’t want to stay, and that anonymous player on the Nats who dissed him seems to suggest that the teammates don’t really like him either. If the Dodgers made him a close offer, he might just come. But we know the Dodgers are not going 10 years or $300M
So you want the superstar who most big legacy teams want no part of and whose own teammates are openly taking shots at him because they don't want him to come back to their clubhouse?
If that is the piece that puts us over the top, then yes. But in all seriousness, I’d rather have more pitching, SP if possible.
Just listened to the chowderheads at CBS going on about now that Mehchado strokes Madres then of course the Phillies are all in landing Harper within hours. Piling on... "setting them up nicely when his good buddy Trout joins Harper in Philly in two years" Oh and "Phillies land Kimbrel" as well
Harper is essentially a top 20 player, near the bottom of that list too Does the potential outweigh what seems to be amazing mediocrity for the skillset 300MM Lot of money for anybody
Make that $301M for someone who "doesn't hustle like that" yesterday so you wonder how much a "streaky .249 head case" will fetch when owners are keeping wallets tight to set an example
Ken RosenthalVerified account@Ken_Rosenthal Within my column on the Harper contract, what the #Dodgers actually offered the free-agent outfielder - three years with at least one opt-out and an AAV above Zack Greinke’s record $34.4M but well below $40M. This twit seems to contradict the other news reports that stated 4 @ $180M Of course is rep is weak Also read elsewhere that the Dodgers were NEVER going past 8 years which wasn't going to work when Harper 'needed' to be the #1 kahuna. Bore ass promised him he'd beat Stanton's deal and he did.. barely. Mehchado could still end up making more $$$ over the years.
Am I the only one really glad the Bryce rumors have stopped. It was like a sitcom that used to be good, but dragged on way past its prime.
