Bill Plunkett ✔ @billplunkettocr Roberts said there was tenderness developing in area of old blister on Rich Hill's index finger. 7:20 PM - 10 Sep 2016 Bill Plunkett ✔ @billplunkettocr Dave Roberts: "I feel sick to my stomach ... opportunity of lifetime for Rich." "Made decision "to give us best chance to win World Series" 7:18 PM - 10 Sep 2016
I used to get flack for saying that about Dave early on when he was getting killed for his decisions. But now i think yall can see that its the truth. Daves a 'players' coach... but is the FO's man.
tough call for roberts (obviously) but he did what he thought was in the best interest of the team was bummed he didn't let hill (at least) start the 8th but team goals trump individual accomplishments
Unfortunately, I didnt see the game, but from what I've read, the official view from Roberts is that Hill was showinh signs of another possible blister on that sensistive finger? I guess that is ultimately the managers call, but that is twice now that Roberts has pulled a pitcher when working on a no no, and in this case, a perfect no no. As a pitcher, I want to know that my manager will be there backing me up when I have a chance to achieve a possible once in a lifetime acheivemen. It shows that the skipper cares about this for me. I know the post season is the goal, but I'd also like to think that the skip cares about these lifetime goal situations, where I dont have to fear getting pulled when all I am doing is doing a spectacularly good job of pitching.
Dave Roberts - Dream killer. Joc crushed that first homer. Man. Corey, Turner and now possibly him and/or Grandal going to put up 25 Dingers. Amazing depth, against righties.
Reminds me of the time Donnie decided to IBB Reed Johnson to face Heyward. Tough call, but Donnie made it, and it paid off. It's what great managers do.
I hear what you are saying, but to say a perfect game or no no is an "individual" accolade is not 100% correct. Both Joc and Puig made spectacular plays to preserve the game, especially Puig. Either players could have injured but they layed out to make the plays. You see this in alot of no nos. A perfect game is TEAM effort, and Roberts denied not just Hill, but the other players who did eveything they could to preserve that perfect game. That is teamwork. So the next time a pitcher has a no no or perfect game going into the 6th or 7th, how willing will the defense be willing to lay it all out on a line to help their pitcher if it wont matter....that someone is going to pull the pitcher even if everything is going right? Roberts is thinking final goal...but I think it's more nuanced than that.
class from hill... Seemingly upset when the decision was made to remove him from the game, Hill seemed to come to terms with it an hour after his start had ended. "Look, Dave has been incredible," Hill said. "This organization has been incredible, and where we are at as a team is far more important than any accolades. You have to look at it from that standpoint and move forward." But getting denied your chance at history? Only 23 perfect games have been recorded. "Dave has been incredible, and it goes without saying, the position we are in has a lot to do with how he's been able to orchestrate this team," Hill said. "There is a lot of credit that goes to Dave. I don't think there should be (anything said) other than the position we're in is a good one."
Let me get this straight. You are all the same group of guys talking shit about hill a few weeks ago about his blisters and now Roberts was in the right for taking him out? So because he's been pitching well everything's all good? Please. His blisters could come back next start, next month or game 2 of a series and that would be ok right? You all would be bashing him for leaving a start that meant something. This guy had a chance at history and was dominate. Pick and choose fellas pick and choose
Roberts was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. Hill is a key component to this team's postseason hopes and his health has been tenuous at best. Call me naive but I don't doubt for a minute Roberts' honesty in his post game comments. He has nothing to gain and everything to lose by lying in that situation. On a personal level, this decision might end up making Hill even more money in the FA market. A successful postseason run might make him more $$$ than a single regular accomplishment.
Legitimately couldn't care less about this. Feel for Rich but maybe he can pitch a perfect game in Game 2 of the NLDS. Win today please.
LOL... Fans not giving a fuck about things like this is like when we say players should take discounts. We have no say in what players should think and feel. They are people too, and ultra highly competitive at that so they should have the right to achieve rare feats when possible. That said, GO BLUE!!!!
