Ned signed and didn't resign a number of infielders. We had two alternatives on last years team who are now gone. How many infielders are back from the 25 man roster last year? How many are new? Hairston is a good pickup who covers a number of spots but SS is his weakest. Ned made choices as we all do and now his buffet is limited to the ingredients he purchased.

Saw an interview with DBB earlier in the week and in his own way he said this was to be expected and it is what happens with young players.

I have a hunch this team was not built with the expectation they would have the best record in baseball, be ranked 2nd in the power poll and have a 6 game lead at this point. If we were struggling at or around 500 the holes MIGHT not be as glaring nor the pressure on him at the lead off spot as great.

Not addressing my point though. Saying "we should have got a better backup SS" is a lot easier than actually doing it. Someone would have needed to not be signed, we'd have needed to pay said player, we'd have needed to find a player, it's not easy to find a guy capable of playing SS and who can hit a little bit for cheap, those guys don't grow on trees lol

Agreed but we had two of them last year named Furcal and Carroll. This is all part of the fact that our farm system has provided us with limited MLB ready position players. Perhaps some of his most recent acquisitons will bear fruit. Ned had a budget cut and the salaries of AJ and Dee helped him to be able to afford Harang and Capuano etc. It may appear I am bashing Ned but my points are related not just to this year but to his tenure and how many minor league position players have we traded for who have helped us? Yes Dre comes up right away but his track record is limited. I wonder how his acquisition skills have compared with team operated by Kasten over the years. Was it Kasten with the Braves and Nats and the NBA teams or their GM?

Don't worry. Ned can get Edgar Renteria or Omar Vizquel any time he wants.

It gets more painful when Furcal is playing like when he was in Atlanta.

There's no Jason Repko or Stan Conte on Atlanta or the Cards.

He is frustrating to watch NO DOUBT but he is still a kid, give him a chance! If he were the only youngster to start hot and taper a bit then yes send him down for a spell but he is not unique. I'm with Goat the time for him to hit 8th is fast approaching, by the way Fookie said he would come around.

It sounds as a move might come, either moving him to the 8 spot or AAA. The problem keeps being the same: who can replace him?

On the other side, he's looking bad on both sides, so replacing him might not be that hard at all. All Herrera, Luis Cruz, De Jesus can replace what Dee is providing.
